Overview: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle is an award-winning novel written by Japan's best-selling novelist Haruki Murakami. Murakami won worldwide acclaim for this novel, originally written in Japanese and later translated by Jay Rubin into English in collaboration with the author. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle is in the form of three books - The Thieving Magpie, Bird as Prophet and The Birdcatcher- all of which form one volume. This book is a mix of prophecy, comedy and menace, comparable to the works of Mishima and Pynchon.

The novel is characterised by its unseemingly philosophical bent and the complex way in which the plot unfolds. The simple plot revolves around unemployed Toru Okada and his search for his missing cats. In the beginning, Toru's search is solely for his cats, but later his search turns into a frantic hunt for his wife Kumiko, who is caught in the netherworld, beneath Tokyo. Readers will find the narrative rather simple, but a series of mundane events give a complex twist to the plot.

Other characters in the novel are Noboru - Kumiko's brother- a politician possessed with demonic powers, May- Kumiko's friend, Lieutenant Mamiya- an aging war veteran, Malta Kano and Creta Kano - the psychic sisters, Nutmeg Akasaka, Cinnamon Akasaka.

Marukami's other works include A Wild Sheep Chase, its sequel, Dance Dance Dance, and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
